  • When The Dubs Hit The Turbo Button

When The Dubs Hit The Turbo Button

"The Warriors will tell you that they don't always know when it will happen, cannot always sense the start of an avalanche. But it has happened enough that the team believes, just as its foes do, that one will arrive at some point."

When it happens it is a beautiful thing to watch, if you are a fan of the Warriors.

  • Disagreeing with Facts

“I think one of the reasons that that example comes to mind is because this is a report of facts and research,” she said. “This is a summary of really important and, in some cases, government-funded work that was done to understand the causes and effects of sexual and gender violence. What does it mean that the Trump administration doesn’t want the public to have that information?”

Sadly, I think this is a case of it’s not a problem if we don’t acknowledge it.

  • Help Me Help You

"I used to cycle through disbelief, shame, anger. Now I just show compassion and move on," she added.

I’ve heard this happening myself while in the waiting room for my doctor. The person first didn’t want a nurse practitioner, but a doctor. She was presented with options. Then she wanted a doctor that went through medical school in the US. More options were given. Then she wanted a doctor that wasn’t a woman. Finally, she wanted a doctor that was white.

Trilogy of Terror was something I should have never watched as a kid. The little warrior doll scares the hell out of me, even today! (via the loop)

  • You're Doing it Wrong - Scrambled Eggs

One common mistake people make when cooking scrambled eggs is adding milk or cream. You may have been whisking your eggs with milk since you were a little kid, but we're telling you now: It's time to stop.

It may seem counterintuitive, but the addition of milk, cream, or any other liquid for that matter, will actually make it more likely that your eggs will turn out dry. By thinning out the eggs, it’s easier to overcook them. Most importantly, the milk dilutes the taste of the eggs. It also screws with the texture, leaving the eggs slightly rubbery – and no one wants rubbery eggs. If you’re using good, farm-fresh eggs, you don’t need anything except maybe a little salt and pepper to make them taste delicious. A little butter never hurt anyone, either.

I’m never sure how to take articles that tell you that you’ve been doing it wrong. You know the ones like you’re eating this food wrong or using this tool wrong.

We have been making more and more scrambled eggs since the kids enjoy it this way. Me? I prefer good over easy eggs.

  • Goodbye Mr. Spock

I always felt great knowing I shared a birthday with Mr. Spock. As has been said on the interwebs today, he did live long and prosper.

A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP

A post shared by Star Wars (@starwars)

Not too sure how I feel about this. I suppose it could be a worse title, right? I'm hoping that when the movie comes out that the only thing we needed to worry about is the title.

  • Tracking

The KizON wearable also features a ‘One Step Direct Call’ button, which lets parents contact their children easily. If the kid fails to answer a call from any pre-set phone number within 10 seconds, KizON will automatically connect the call so the parent can listen through the built-in microphone. Kids can also dial a pre-configured phone number in case they need to speak to an adult.

Good idea, but the device is too big. I don’t think it will fit on my kids' arms. I don’t think I can convince them to wear this either.

  • Lucky They Have Competition

For several months, Amazon has been quietly discouraging the sales of Hachette’s physical books by several techniques — cutting the customer’s discount so the book approaches list price; taking weeks to ship the book; suggesting prospective customers buy other books instead; and increasing the discount for the Kindle version.

Good thing Amazon has competition, right?

  • Experimenting with a Nexus 5

Decent article on Ars Technica about what I’m doing now - an iPhone user using a Nexus 5. I hope to write a few words about this in the weeks to come. But the (pain) points about the process are well covered in the linked article.

  • GPA and Tweets

Of 381 college admissions officers who answered a Kaplan telephone questionnaire this year, 31 percent said they had visited an applicant’s Facebook or other personal social media page to learn more about them — a five-percentage-point increase from last year. More crucially for those trying to get into college, 30 percent of the admissions officers said they had discovered information online that had negatively affected an applicant’s prospects.

You never know how your social media accounts will bleed into your real life.

It must be a slow news day. But seriously, why would you eat at either of these places since you have other burger joint choices? Though the fries and Mighty Wings are pretty good at McDonald’s.

Sherlock will return to PBS Masterpiece on Jan. 19 at 10 p.m. That means the show will air back-to-back for the first time with that other hugely popular and influential Brit import, Downton Abbey (which returns Jan. 5).

  • Vaccine Deniers

But there’s a big difference between not eating GMOs and not getting a vaccine. If I don’t eat a corn chip at my local taqueria because I have doubts about the lack of research on GMOs and believe it’s because science and the government are in Monsanto’s pocket, I’m not going to put my dining companions at risk of disease. But if I decide not to vaccinate my kid, I make him a potential carrier. He may be able to fight off measles, mumps, rubella, and other illnesses — but what if he spreads a disease to somebody who, for whatever reason, isn’t so lucky?

I stand on the side of getting your child vaccinated. But it is a personal choice. Try to make an informed decision, OK?

  • The Sistine Chapel Problem

In the 530-plus years since he painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City, the Renaissance artist’s famous frescoes have been dealt a fair share of abuse. They’re dusty, they’re dirty, and they’re constantly being damaged by humidity, carbon dioxide and other pollutants.

Now, the head of the Vatican Museums, Antonio Paolucci, is warning that, if new air conditioning and air purifying systems that are being installed at the facility don’t significantly cut the pollution levels in the chapel, he will have no choice but to limit the number of tourists who visit the site.

Seeing the Sistine Chapel is on my bucket list. I hope I have a chance to see it someday.
