Of course, families should eat out—especially in a city such as San Francisco where young palates can be exposed to a wide array of flavors. What’s more, mothers and fathers deserve a break from cooking and kids need to learn how to dine in an environment where they’re expected to behave.

Dining out with kids can be difficult, especially if one of them is fussy. We’ve been on our way to a restaurant when one of the girls was throwing a big tantrum. Our solution was to avoid going out at that time and just get takeaway food. We tend to stay in the more family-friendly places, where any stray outburst from kids is expected.
