The Unhealthy Choice
After just one year, some schools around the country are dropping out of the healthier new federal lunch program, complaining that so many students turned up their noses at meals packed with whole grains, fruits and vegetables that the cafeterias were losing money.
It is sad that schools are bowing to the pressure of kids not choosing to eat healthy meals.
What Does It Taste Like?
The London Underground map has inspired a range of spin-offs over the years, with everything from musical icons to popular restaurants plotted along its interweaving lines. But now a 54-year-old systems analyst from Blackpool has created the most bizarre version to date – a map that shows what each station tastes like.
I’m going to say gross to this story.
Miley Cyrus VMA Performance
That young lady, who is 20, is obviously deeply troubled, deeply disturbed. Probably has confidence issues, probably an eating disorder. And I don't think anybody should have put her up on stage. That was disgusting.
Ben Affleck is Batman
I don’t agree with the choice. It’s going to set back the Batman franchise, even though this is occurring in a Superman-Batman film. Affleck doesn’t have the acting chops or the necessary menace to be Batman. I remember when Michael Keaton was chosen to play Batman. The reaction was, “Huh?” But Keaton has a hint of crazy to him, that he could go off at any time. Affleck doesn’t have any such trait, let alone charisma, for this role.
Rumored Apple iPhone Event September 10
This was confirmed by The Loop so it must be true. I’m really looking forward to a new iPhone, having been with the iPhone 4S for close to two years. The hardware will seem like a leap to me, and you add in iOS 7 and I’ll be a happy camper for another two years.
There seems to be a lot of talk about smartphone fatigue lately. It seems smartphones have hit their peak, as far as features. But I am still excited about this upcoming gadget, even if it won’t wow the general tech press or Wall Street. But what do I know? I’m just a lowly consumer.
The Cost of Being a Super Hero
To live and breathe as Spider-Man, about 83K. Hulk? 415K Batman? 135M. Wolverine? 23.5M. And finally, to live as Superman, it would cost 24K a year. I think all these calculations are without powers, though Wolverine’s does include the cost of Adamantium.
Fired via Text Message
According to the cook, at least 12 other employees received the same message. The surprise Fourth of July firing gave no notice, the employee said. The restaurant is now shut down, and Jackson says the workers are waiting for their final paychecks.
What a way to be fired.
Ziva Leaving NCIS
Cote de Pablo is invoking Gibbs’ Rule No. 11 — “When the job is done, walk away” — and has decided to leave CBS' NCIS.
Why is it that the female lead characters leave this show? The Tony and Ziva tease will finally come to an end.
Renting Lego
Pleygo seems like an interesting idea, renting Lego pieces for the kids. As long as the process is as described, it might be something to consider when they go older. We have plenty of toys right now to keep them occupied.
Yahoo! News Makeover
I normally use Yahoo! News to get my online news. Went there today and thought the CSS for the page didn’t load as it looked stark. But I guess that’s the redesign.
Please Put Your Cellphone in the Refridgerator
Why a refrigerator? The answer does not, as some might assume, have anything to do with temperature. In fact, it does not matter particularly if the refrigerator was plugged in. It is the materials that make up refrigerator walls that could potentially turn them into anti-eavesdropping devices.
Planets Closer to Us
Ron Miller, a former art director for NASA, used digital trickery to superimpose scale drawings of Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune over the same landscape, highlighting the sheer size of the planets.
How would life be different if we saw our planetary cousins closer to us?
The Fragmentation Argument
Siri–the semi-intelligent virtual assistant feature–has been available on the iPhone since the iPhone 4S launched with iOS 5. However, Siri did not work with the iPad until the iPad 3 came out with iOS 6, and it still doesn’t work with earlier generation iPhones, iPads, or iPod Touch devices. That’s just one example of the subversive fragmentation within iOS. While almost every iOS device is running the latest and greatest version of Apple’s mobile OS, the available features and general experience vary widely from one device to the next. The highly-touted Passbook feature works with all iPhones and iPod Touch devices, but not on the iPad. The Panoramic picture feature of the camera app works with newer iPhones and iPod Touches, but not the iPad.
I’ve only been one iPhone model behind, at the most so I would get most of the iOS features of a new update. I always felt the fragmentation issue with Android and iOS was more a developers issue and not a consumers problem.
It is weird to me that new Android phones can come with older versions of Android. When considering an Android phone I looked at the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One. The HTC One comes with Android 4.1 whereas the Galaxy S4 with 4.2. The difference, from what I understand, is features I would enjoy. I could hold out hope that the HTC One would eventually be updated. But how long would I have to wait?
Sidewalk Biking
Per San Francisco Transportation Code 7.2.12 it is illegal and unsafe to ride on the sidewalk if you are over the age of 13. Not to mention there have been a number of recent news articles that also seem to suggest there's a high level of meth use among people who bike on the sidewalk. That's why we're creating a city-wide sidewalk biking offender list. We won't be listing names or showing faces (we're not evil, come on), we will be taking your eyewitness accounts of people riding their bikes on the sidewalk and adding them to our offenders map below.
I didn’t know that biking on the sidewalk was a sign of meth use.
