Christmas Eve was at the house as usual. But in the early afternoon, we stopped by Grandma and Grandpa’s house to see them, take a few photos, and drop off presents. I’m working on processing the photos to post to the photos site.
This specific photo was taken on December 24, 2010, in San Jose.
Angelina Jolie as Salt
Netflix Synopsis:
After she’s accused of being a Russian sleeper spy, rogue CIA agent Evelyn Salt (Angelina Jolie) goes on the run, using every tactic, accent and disguise she knows to elude her pursuers, clear her name and protect her husband. Her supervisor, Winter (Liev Schreiber), buys her story, while counterintelligence officer Peabody (Chiwetel Ejiofor) decidedly does not and will do anything to stop her in this fast-paced, intrigue-filled spy adventure.
A Christmas card type photo, don’t you think?
Ah, Christmastime. It’s a time of joy and wonder and sharing good times with family and friends. And you know what? It’s Mia’s first Christmas!
She had a great Christmas Eve. During the day we were able to see Grandma and Grandpa. At night, she stayed up as long as she could, entertaining everyone with her cuteness and antics. Unfortunately, her eyes grew heavy just a little after 8pm.
Mia and Binky
Binky. Waa Waa. Chup Chup. ‘cifer. Well, it’s that green thing in this photo that Mia puts in her mouth to calm herself. We were at Maggiano’s celebrating Farrah’s birthday when I snapped this photo using the Canon S95.

Another video, instead of a photo, today. This video is from this past Thanksgiving. There are so many things to be thankful for this year. This was Mia’s first Thanksgiving. We spent the first part of the day at Grandma and Grandpa’s house. We enjoyed a nice breakfast.
Later in the afternoon, we traveled to the Traber’s house with Nana for Thanksgiving dinner. As always, my sister made a great turkey, and there were plenty of other things to eat as well.
I’m happy I no longer host the blog on tumblr.com. Imagine, they’ve been down for 12+ hours. What’s up @tumblr? #fumblr # I swear, tumblr was working a few minutes ago. Instead of a photo today, I’m publishing a small video. Mia loves going outside. It doesn’t matter if it’s cold or raining. We bundled her up and gave her to Nana, who walked with her around the front of the house. She even introduced Mia to the lawn Santa Claus. We still need to visit mall Santa Claus this year as well.

This photo was taken by the good people at our daycare. Mia looks so comfortable, doesn’t she? Even though we miss these tiny moments because Mia is at daycare and not with us, we know she is making friends, learning, and having fun. By the way, today is Mia’s fifth month birthday!

An interesting site that is a collection of “nerdy interviews"revolving around hardware and software these nerds choose to use. It’s insightful to get a peak at what tools (mostly Apple Macs) and the software these nerds choose. It makes me wish I was making more money to buy some of these “toys”.
Mia had her first immunization shots yesterday. Oh, the pain! But she’s a trooper, a tough cookie, like her mom.
She was given three shots and a sweet liquid that was taken orally. Farrah readily volunteered to hold me, though she didn’t really know what to expect. As she tightly held Mia the nurse gave the first shot into Mia’s right leg. When the needle entered Mia’s thigh, and the plunger was pressed down, Mia let out the biggest cry I ever heard from her tiny mouth.
I’m extremely late in posting this, but it’s time to say goodbye to Vox. I hosted this blog there for a while - from July 2006 to June 2008.
The appeal of Vox, to me, was the community that was created during its inception. I found it easy to connect with people who shared common interests from various places around the world. Vox also allowed a user to post privately or to a specific group of people you designated.
I’m not sure what this is supposed to mean. Is Darth Vader everywhere?

There are obvious reasons to be thankful, especially this year. As always, I’m thankful for my family who supports me in whatever I choose to do. I’m thankful for the friends who are always there for me. I’m thankful for my health - even though there have been a couple of rough patches this year. I’m thankful for being gainfully employed - though this may change next year. I’m thankful for having a wife who puts up with me.
The plan in the morning was for Mia to wear this lovely outfit to daycare. (Aren’t those tights cute?) Of course, it didn’t turn out to be the case. After taking a few photos, Mia promptly made the dress part “unwearable” for the day.
Mia is getting stronger. She grips items with her hands, making some of them difficult to take away. She can’t stand on her own - those are mommy’s hands holding her up - but she can stand propped like that for a while.

In a previous life, I was a record store manager. (Yes, I can hear Mia now, “What’s a record?”) Back then, I would enjoy new release Tuesdays, when new music and movie rentals would show up. It was easy to keep track of what was coming out back then. Ever since I’ve been out of retail, it has been a bit more difficult to determine when “this title” is available for rent or “that artist” is coming out with something new.
Yesterday, we were very grateful to share a special moment in our friends’ lives as we attended their wedding. The ceremonies and reception took place at The Janet Pomeroy Center. Yes, there were two ceremonies, or rather one ceremony separated into two parts. The first part was a Buddhist Nepalese ceremony. The second portion, briefly captured in the video clip, was a Christian Filipino ceremony. They were wonderful ceremonies. And the reception - the food, drink, singing, and dancing - made for a memorable time.
Listening to Mia over the intercom. She’s trying to talk herself to sleep. At least I hope she’s going to go back to sleep. # It’s fun to do things together as a family, like being sick all at the same time! #
Wow, a post other than photos and Twitter updates! Yeah, I’ve been a bit behind in reviewing movies that I’ve been able to watch the last couple of months. Yes, even with Mia, work, and all the things life has to throw at you, there is still a little time to enjoy a movie. Well, I enjoyed some of them. Others were not so good.
Karate Kid (2010) – Why remake this movie?
Mia and Roseola
I believe it started on Sunday. A slight redness developed on her cheeks. By Tuesday, it spread ever so slightly to her arms. Today we saw a doctor who diagnosed it as roseola. It’s nothing serious. It seems to look worse than it is. Either way, Mia is staying home with me today.
Mia had her second set of immunizations on Friday. The occurrence of roseola after the shots appears to be coincidental, as the vaccines she was given wouldn’t normally produce a rash.
Enjoying the rain & light wind in dwntwn SF. Spending alone time at Sears Fine Foods. Hope to take photos 2day, but not sure it I can. # Hoping to play some CoD: Black Ops tonight. Neighbor noted delivery person simply threw packages down on the porch.
One of Mia’s favorite toys is the Winkel, or Wink as we call it. She just seems to like gnawing on the little sucker. She also can wave it around now and almost throw it - of course not on purpose. I was able to take a series of photos through the crib slats using the Canon 17-55mm lens.

It’s Mia’s first Halloween. We carved three pumpkins that afternoon - one representative of each of us. (The fourth pumpkin in the back is made of plastic.) Well, Farrah carved two of them. Can you tell which one I did?
We posed Mia in her pumpkin outfit next to the pumpkins as you see here. She looked over her shoulder, then back at us, then over her shoulder again. I’m guessing she wasn’t sure what to make of those “dudes” behind her who are dressed like her.

I blame Auntie Sarah for talking about Starbucks doughnuts last week. Of course on Saturday, during our regular coffee run, we had to try them. We chose the Birthday Cake Mini Doughnut. Before consuming the little doughnuts, we couldn’t pass up a photo opportunity with Mia and the doughnut (or donut if you prefer). Farrah placed the doughnut on the end of a chopstick. What you see here is the end result.

The Ford Edge 2011 commercial has placed Shayna Zaid & The Catch’s song “Morning Sun” deep in my noggin. I sing a bit of it to Mia, at least the hand-clapping opening part of the song.
Mia channeling her inner Gene Simmons (not Jean Simmons). She was very active just before bedtime. She just started moving around, making faces, and discovering things in her immediate area. She looked at her feet as if it was the first time she saw them. Perhaps it was the first time she noticed them. Then of course she got a bit fussy because it was bedtime.
Charlize Theron doing music videos now? I guess the movie business is slow. I take it the song didn’t do well since this video has been out since July, and this is the first I’ve seen the video or heard this song.
Mia started, on her own, rolling onto her belly this morning. Ugh, another thing to worry about while she sleeps. # @standardtheme Does your theme have a single column option - no sidebar? I’m not buying.
We spent part of this past Sunday morning in Santa Cruz. Farrah, Mia and I had breakfast at The Buttery. Afterward, we stopped by my sister’s house to hang out for a while. She suggested we walk over to the local Farmer’s Market, where we’d meet up with Kayla. After coming back from the walk, Auntie Susana put a Snow White barrette in Mia’s hair. Surprisingly, it almost got all of her hair.
Took my last dose antibiotics. Hoping to no longer feel lightheaded and nauseous - side effects of the drug - after today. #
It has been a week now since I’ve started to take the antibiotics meant to cure what ails me. I find it funny how drugs that are meant to help cure you make you feel so blah. I guess it’s just how your body interacts with the drug, teaming up with your immune system to defeat whatever is bothering you. I suppose that’s why they put all those funky adverse effects on the label.
This is how Mia looked when we got her ready to meet friends at Stanford Shopping Center one Sunday. Since it was a nice sunny weekend, Farrah decided Mia should wear a hat to ward off the sun. Mia seemed to enjoy the hat, and the day as well.
This photo was taken on September 12, 2010.
Ok, this is a photo for “Make Up Monday” since didn’t post a photo last Wednesday. I took this photo of Mia as Farrah was getting her ready for her first day at daycare. Unfortunately, I was starting to feel sick that morning, so I wasn’t much help to Farrah in getting Mia ready for this day. (Actually, I’m still feeling awful. It’s the meds I’m certain.)
How did Mia’s day go?
I’m sorry I haven’t been posting lately, especially missing the weekly Wednesday Mia photo post. But I was sick. Actually, I still am a bit ill.
The short story:
Woke up with a stomach ache Tuesday morning. Thought nothing of it. Took a couple of antacids hoping it’d go away. Wednesday morning I woke up with more localized pain on the left side of my abdomen. (By the way - this was also Mia’s first day at daycare.

Waistlies of the Day: Esquire’s Style Blog investigates the discrepancy between what major labels pass off as size 36 dress pants versus their actual size. I’ve never been slim — I played offensive line in high school — but I’m no cow either. (I’m happily a “Russell Crowe” body type.) So I immediately went across the street, bought a tailor’s measuring tape, and trudged from shop to shop, trying on various brands’ casual dress pants.

Mia had just gotten out of the bath and was all nice and dry when I took this photo. Her hair, of course, dries into a Mohawk state on its own. This photo was taken on Thursday, September 2, 2010, with an iPhone 3GS.
I went to log into my Yahoo! Mail account, which I haven’t done in quite a while - since I don’t really use Yahoo! Mail any longer. And I’m presented with this full-blown ad. Granted, it doesn’t look too distracting. Thank goodness it’s not a pop-up ad, but still, I see enough ads on the Internet. I just want to log into my account!
Thinking of getting one of the newly announced shiny Apple toys? You may want to pop over to Ars Technica and get their initial hands-on impression of each new device.
I was briefly toying with the idea of changing my iPhone 3GS to a regular phone and getting the new iPod Touch. But then I would be, once again, carrying two devices to stay as connected as I want to be.
I propped Mia up on one of Farrah’s pillows while she was in the shower. I managed to get a few good photos of her. This photo was taken on August 29, 2010.
Every time I launch my iPhone, I see this photo of Mia. I can’t help but smile.
What’s this? It’s a list of links I’ve read this week, which I hope you’d find interesting as well. I usually get interesting links sent to me by friends, posted on Facebook, or run across them in my casual browsing of the Internet. Often, I don’t have the time or patience to read the link when I see it. What I do then is place the link in the great Instapaper.

Vampires on television are successful (e.g. Vampire Diaries, True Blood). So why not try Zombies? Zombies are getting their shot on AMC’s The Walking Dead. The trailer looks good. It reminds me a bit of 28 Days Later. AMC now has some interesting shows. I just wish they were offered in HD. But I’ll watch this show to see if it should be added to the DVR lineup.
I tried. I really tried. But Tumblr just didn’t meet my blogging needs.
Tumblr was supposed to make my life easier by allowing me to post content quickly. I also wouldn’t have to worry about upgrading any server software, something I worry about with a WordPress self-install. Best of all Tumblr is free.
Where Tumblr failed me
But Tumblr failed me in the simple act of posting when I want to post.
I always smile at these iPhone / iPad killers. I wish they’d come out first before people (e.g. people in blog comments) declare victory over the iPhone/iPad. What we don’t know are important things like price, battery life, how it actually looks and feels, etc. I’m guessing by the time the Samsung Galaxy Tab is released, the new iPad will be out. More (or less) info is available at Engadget.
Farrah placed Mia on the Boppy and I took a series of photos. The little lens flare is light from the bedroom window, not some Photoshop effect. This photo was taken on August 22, 2010.

Netflix Synopsis:
Journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) and rebellious computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) team up to investigate the unsolved disappearance of wealthy Henrik Vanger’s (Sven-Bertil Taube) teen niece (Ewa Fröling), only to uncover dark secrets about Vanger’s powerful family. Niels Arden Oplev directs this Swedish thriller based on the first novel from Stieg Larsson’s best-selling trilogy.
My Take:
I haven’t read the book, a synopsis of the book, or even a synopsis of the movie before renting it.

Look at the photos. This neighborhood is not hallowed. The people who live and work here are not obsessed with 9/11. The blocks around Ground Zero are like every other hard-working neighborhood in New York, where Muslims are just another thread of the city fabric.

I’ve been interested in geotagging photos, only on occasions, such as vacations and parties that happen in public places. But I would never consider geotag a photo showing the location of anyone’s home, let alone my own.

It has been four weeks. In the quiet times, when there is a chance for reflection, time seems to have passed by rapidly. At other times, especially during the crying spells, time seems to move glacially. Either way, it still amounts to four weeks. Mia is now four weeks old.
Things Learned
There are only so many books you can read and so many stories you can hear from others who’ve been through it, to prepare you for a child.
I’ve used the other “ask question” services only sparingly, such as formspring.me and tumblr. Facebook’s implementation may work better since everyone seems to be on Facebook.
I haven’t been to San Jose’s Japantown in a long time. Perhaps it’s time for a visit.
Oh man! This does not look good.
I’m not liking the Green Lantern movie posters. I got a bad feeling about this superhero film as well. I hope I’m wrong.
Now I understand why so few photos are taken during the first few weeks of a baby’s birth. First off, the baby is often asleep. Seriously, there are only so many photos you can take of a sleeping baby. I suppose you can take photos in various outfits, but nonetheless, they are still sleeping. The second reason so few photos are taken is that you - the parents - are really freakin’ exhausted!

The Avengers! From the @Marvel Studios panel at Comic-Con (L-R): Robert Downey Jr., Clark Gregg, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Samuel L. The Netflix synopsis: When a warmongering prime minister (Fengyi Zhang) advances his armies against two rival kingdoms, he unwittingly prompts his adversaries (Chen Chang and Yong You) to work together in this martial arts action-adventure. The ensuing conflict culminates in the epic battle of Red Cliff, a struggle by the sea involving more than one million soldiers.
My Take: A John Woo film without guns isn’t bad. And it doesn’t hurt to have Tony Leung in the cast.
Kate Beckinsale
The Netflix synopsis: “The lone U.S. marshal at a research station in Antarctica, Carrie Stetko (Kate Beckinsale) stumbles upon the continent’s first murder victim. With only three days left until the sun sets for six months, Carrie races to solve the complex mystery before darkness falls.”
My Take: Unfortunately, Whiteout was a weak mystery-thriller where you could predict the culprit(s) in the first 10 minutes. The only saving grace of the movie has going for it is the Antarctic setting and the Kate Beckinsale shower scene.
I miss the rain a little bit. (via laureolaibri, ausgruenden)

I seem to be having problems with the appliances lately. Last week, the Sony LCD television we bought just last year has decided to go on the fritz. Weird horizontal lines started appearing in the image, as well as ghosting. And just a few days ago a small part of our Whirlpool dryer, also purchased last year, broke. The part is key in enabling the door to latch closed.
Luckily both are still under warranty, but just barely.

Given the recent changes in my life, I decided to make part of my online life easier on me. I’m moving the blog off of a self managed web hosting account once more. What I enjoy most about having a self managed web hosting account is full control and access to what I post. But I no longer have time to maintain a server, which requires updating the Wordpress software when patches become available.
Two video clips from Mia’s birth day. I didn’t take photo or video of the actual birth, but these videos are within hours if not minutes afterwards.

The last time we saw Imogen Heap perform was at the Warfield. She was ill during that show, battling a cold. But the effects of the cold didn’t hamper her performance. She sounded great that evening. During this Friday’s concert at the Mountain Winery, Imogen didn’t need to battle being ill, but rather she fought the cold windy night. She was able to deliver another solid performance.
We haven’t been to a concert at the Mountain Winery since the remodel.
I’m a bit glad that we are skipping this year’s iPhone upgrade. Though the retnia display, camera with flash, and even faster processor would be a welcome update, I’m still not sold on the other features. FaceTime is not a big selling point, yet. I’m sure as our iPhones get a year older - next year - the new iPhone will be more appealing. Hopefully, next year there won’t be a delay in getting a new iPhone.

The time has come for players to carve their name in history. One touch, tackle or free kick could crush a nation’s hopes or cause them to build a statue in your honour. Drogba, Rooney and Ronaldo are ready to Write The Future.
An interesting idea for a camera bag. Too bad it only comes in white.
(discovered via photojojo):
The Cloak Camera Bag: a shoot-through satchel with a zippered bottom for toting SLRs incognito. Your camera never leaves the bag so you’ll never miss a shot again. Pairs well with stick-on moustaches, shoe phones, and crime solving.
The Star Wars cantina scene re-imagined with “David Beckham, Daft Punk, Snoop Dogg, Franz Beckenbauer, Noel Gallagher, Ian Brown, Ciara, Jay Baruchel, DJ Neil Armstrong and some of your dear, old friends for an intergalactic 2010 FIFA World Cup™ viewing party that you’ll never forget”.
We were finally able to watch Iron Man 2 the other night in Cupertino. I know its been out for some time, but we’ve been a little busy these last few weeks. The baby fun is just starting, right?
In short, Iron Man 2 is worthy sequel. The movie introduces a few villains and heroes. Also a character from the first film played by another actor. It contains as much story depth and deep character development as they first movie - I write sarcastically - and plenty of action sequences.
We had our baby shower this weekend in Cuesta Park. Luckily the day was warm and sunny, a welcome break from the unusually raining weather we’ve been having here. We cannot say thank you enough to our family and friends who helped put this party together. They did so much work to put this amazing celebration together.
We are equally thankful to our family and friends who were able to share this day with us.

Elevator is acting wonky. I wasn’t expecting to hike up 5 flights of stairs with my 15 lbs backpack this morning. I’m out of shape. # Just removed Gizmodo from my Google Reader feeds. This whole stolen iPhone drama just seems wrong. # It’s crowded here in Starbucks

I wanted to write down my thoughts about the iPad, after using it for a few days.
The Good
It was fully charged when I unpacked it. This made it very easy to start playing with it. Feels solid and durable. It is not as heavy as I thought it would be. The screen is bright. It works like the iPhone screen, adjusting the brightness depending on the environment. Simple to sync with iTunes, just like an iPod or iPhone.

Monday started off well. We had an early morning appointment where we were able to hear the baby’s heartbeat again. It is always a great thing to hear. But after lunch, my noise canceling headphones decided to break on me. I’ve had them for over two years, which I guess is a decent amount of time. But now I can hear all the talking in the office. It makes it a bit more difficult to concentrate.

Update 2: Looks like the video has been taken down.
I’ve always watched way too much television. I’m sure this will change soon, but things are staying the same for now. Here are a few shows we are watching, a few we are looking forward to seeing again, and a few we’ve given up on.
Still Enjoying
Lost - This year there are more answers then questions. This final season is turning out to be their best season. It almost makes me sad to see it go.

We are having a girl!
We reconfirmed this with an ultrasound earlier this week. Farrah had an ultrasound about four weeks ago. During that ultrasound, measurements were taken then and we could find out the sex of our baby. We shared the news with a few people. But not long after that ultrasound was completed, we were called by the hospital asking to schedule another ultrasound. It seems the technician couldn’t record a good enough view of the heart to satisfy whoever reviews the scans.
It’s dogs in slow-mo-catching treats. What could be better?
Steak and corn for dinner tonight!
To celebrate the nice day outside, I decided to throw a couple of ribeye steaks and corn-on-the-cob on the grill. Farrah is making bibingka as well.
How do you take your steak?
Three new albums are posted on our Smugmug page today. They are:
Celebrating Farrah’s Birthday Celebrating Kayla’s 16th Birthday Kaleb’s Baptism I know I haven’t been posting photos in a timely manner after the events. There are several reasons why this is the case. I hope to write about these reasons in future posts.
As always, the albums are accessible by simply answering the following question when prompted:
What was the name of Farrah’s first dog?
Just because I’m hurting Doesn’t mean I’m hurt Doesn’t mean I didn’t get what I deserve No better and no worse — Lost! by Coldplay
I was laid off yesterday. I was let go. I was kicked-to-the-curb. My services were no longer required. And yet I feel fine today.
Honestly, there is no bitterness behind my words. This is not my first layoff, and I’m sure it won’t be my last.
If you haven’t heard, Apple announced the iPad yesterday. It seems everyone who hasn’t seen or used it in person describes it as giant iPod Touch. It seems more than that, but having not seen it in person, I could be wrong in this assumption. The question is, “Will you get one?” I’m leaning towards yes. The price is high, but not as high as predicted.
I’m interested in what the iPad can do for me?

I wish the “piles” feature in BumpTop Mac would work for my real world desk. I’m not sure I’d use this application a lot since I try to keep my computer desktop clean. It would probably work best for someone like my wife, who seems to place every item on her desktop.
There’s also a Windows version available.

Farrah is pregnant!
[Note: Apologies to our shared friends on Facebook. I know you’ve heard this announcement before, from Farrah’s wall posting last week. I just haven’t had time to make a blog post and post it on my Facebook wall as well.]
Not much to add. Well, I guess we could throw in a few details.
How far along are you?
A belated Happy New Year to all! Welcome to Twenty-Ten! This is the proper way to say it, right?
Again, I blame the Winter Break for not doing this post earlier. But here I am, a little late to the party, trying to summarize blog postings and happenings from the last year:
Kayla started playing volleyball. This prompted my sister to get into DSLR photography. She is doing great taking photos, and using the plenty of tips on photography from family and friends.
I haven’t done well with my goal of completing past dailyshoot photo assignments, as I had hoped to in a recent post. But I did have a chance to take photos yesterday. We met up with Yen and Timothy at Valley Fair Mall. It’s amazing how much Timothy has grown. I was able to take a few photos of him, but boy does he move a lot. Of the 40-plus photos I took, only half were usable.
I didn’t have definite plans this morning, other than driving my wife to work. Unfortunately, she’s working New Year’s Eve day whereas I have it off. After dropping her off I decided to try a new place for breakfast. I launched the Yelp app on my iPhone and found Christie’s in Burlingame. Based on the reviews already on Yelp it seemed like the perfect way to start the day. Well, it would have been perfect if my wife could have joined me.
